Aircraft can carry diferent kind of things. Aircraft can carry passengers as well as nuclear weapons etc.

The payload is a term used for carrying the ability of an aircraft. Payload ability is usually measured in terms of weight. Depending on the nature of the mission, the payload of a vehicle may include passengers and cargo etc. Nuclear weapons,  munitions, flight crew or other physical equipment. Some time air crafts carry the extra fuel for the use in need. Extra fuel is also considered part of the payload.

How much payload can an average size airplane hold?

Let’s .  ..see an example of an average size airplane  Boeing 737-800. It has a maximum payload of about 80,000 kg (175,000 lbs). This mentioned weight includes the weight of the aircraft, which is about 41,000 kg (90,000 lbs). This mentioned weight also includes the weight of the fuel which is about 18,000 kg (40,000 lbs). This leaves about 20,000 kg (45,000 lbs) for passengers, cargo, and crew.
