Chlorine has the electronic configuration  1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p5.

Chlorine possesses 17 electrons because of its atomic number of 17.

 

Explanation:

The distribution of the electrons among the various energy levels, shells, subshells, and orbitals is revealed by this structure.

 

Shell 1:

  • Shell 1 has just one subshell, designated as 1s.
  • It is made up of a single, spherical orbital called the 1s orbital, which can hold up to two electrons.
  • Two electrons occupy the first shell in chlorine.

 

Shell 2:

  • The second shell has the shells 2s and 2p as its subshells.
  • The 2s orbital, the only spherical orbital in the 2s sub-shell, has a capacity of two electrons at most.
  • In chlorine, there are two electrons in the 2s subshell.
  • Three dumbbell-shaped orbitals, designated 2px, 2py, and 2pz, make up the 2p sub-shell.
  • Each orbital can hold a maximum of two electrons.
  • The three 2p orbitals (2px2, 2py2, and 2pz1) make up the total of 6 electrons in the 2p subshell of chlorine.

 

Shell 3:

There are two further subshells, designated as 3s and 3p. The 3s orbital, the only spherical orbital in the 3s subshell, has a capacity of two electrons at most. In chlorine, there are two electrons in the 3s subshell. The three dumbbell-shaped orbitals that make up the 3p sub-shell—3px, 3py, and 3pz—can each carry up to two electrons each. In chlorine, the three 3p orbitals (3px2, 3py2, and 3pz1) collectively house 5 electrons in the 3p subshell.
