Electron configuration of germanium

By: Prof. Dr. Fazal Rehman | Last updated: February 3, 2024

Germanium (Ge) has the following electronic configuration:

1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s2 4p

Explanation

A brief detail of electronic configuration of germanium is given below :

First shell

2 electrons are present in shell 1’s 1s orbital.

Second shell

Eight electrons are found in shell 2—

  • two are in the 2s orbital and
  • six are in the 2p orbitals—2px, 2py, and 2pz.

Third shell

18 electrons are found in shell 3,

  • with 2 in the shell’s third orbital (the 3s),
  • 6 in the shell’s third orbitals (the 3px, 3py, and 3pz),
  • and 10 in the shell’s third orbitals (the 3dxy, 3dxz, 3dyz, 3dz2, and 3dx2-y2).

Fourth shell

4 electrons are found in shell 4,

  • 2 of which are in the 4s orbital
  • and 2 of which are in the 4p orbitals (4px, 4py, and 4pz).
