The router is a special networking device used for connection of two networks. The router is used for transmission of data. They are basically used for transmission of packets between the computer network, and also used to control traffic on the internet.
The packets can be data to be transmitted over the network like email or web pages etc. A packet travels from one router to another router until reaching its final destination.
The router is used to connect two data lines of a different network. When a packet is received on one side of data link, the router reads its network address and determine the best path for its transmission. By using the routing table router can find a best way or path for packets transmission.
The most common form of the router is at home and offices that only transmit IP packets between home computers.
Functions of Router
- Router controls traffic over the network
- The router connects two data lines of a different network.
- Forward packets by using Routing Table
- They can securely transmit packets to their destination
- Provide a fast data rate
Before the discussion about router types firstly we must have to know about the following terms.
Broadband
Broadband is a huge capacity and fast-speed Data transmission medium. It can build on a single cable by establishing different bandwidth channels. Broadband basically used for transmission of voice and also data over the long distance at the same time.
Routers catch the data or information that come through a broadband connection through the modem and transmit it to your device or computer. The router determines the path for packets by routing table. The Routers also provides filtering and encapsulation same as bridges. In OSI Model they work at the physical, data link and network layer.
Like bridges, they are self-learning.
A router has access to the logical address (IP address). It has a routing table that helps it find the best the route from various available paths between the source and destination is the best for transmission of packets. All routing tables are dynamic. It means we can change or update them using protocol. The protocol is a set of rules that must be followed for the transmission of data.
The routers receive the packets from one associated network and transmit them to another connected network. When a packet has a network address of that node that is not connected network than router finds the connected network which is best for transmission of this packets to its next point. Once the router has found the best route for a packet to travel, it passes the packet along with the associated network to another router. That router reads the destination address to find the best route to transmit this packet to its destination
Types of Routers
There are various types of routers in the market. Detailed of all routers are as follow.
- Broadband Routers
- Wireless Routers
- Edge Router
- Broadband Routers
- Subscriber Edge Router
- Inter-provider Border Router
- Core Router
- Wired and Wireless Routers.
Broadband is a special type of router. Broadband routers can perform various types of function. Broadband routers are used to connect a computer or devices with the internet. If you want to connect to the internet through phone and using Voice over IP technology VOIP for this purpose you need a broadband router. These are widely called a special type of modem ADSL. That will have both Ethernet and phone jacks.
Wireless Routers
Wireless routers are used for wireless connection. They used to build a wireless connection at your home or office. And produce a wireless signal, so any device or computer in your wireless router range can use your internet.
If you want to make secure your connection you need to set your password and can also do by getting an IP address. After the creation of the password, your connection will be secured and you can log in through password and user name
Edge Router
An edge router is a special type of router placed at the edge of a network (ISP) internet service provider. This router used for the connectivity of its network with external networks, like a wide area network (WAN) or the Internet. External Broad Protocol is used by the edge router. This protocol is widely used via the Internet to provide connectivity with remote networks.
This router cannot provide internal network communication because it’s already handled by the core router. Edge router provides connectivity with other networks
This term is also known as an access router.
Subscriber Edge Router
This type of router link to an end user or this router located at subscriber’s side or edge. For this, they also called Customer router. It’s working or functions same like an edge router except. It’s configured to broadcast external BGP to its provider’s AS(s)
Inter-provider Border Router
Inter-provider Border Router is used for Interconnection ISP(Internet Service Provider). It is a BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) speaking router that maintains BGP session (the ongoing relationship between two devices) with other BGP speaking Router in other providers’ ASes. By multi-routing protocol for safe data processing and high-quality performances
Core Router
A core router is a type of router that transmit packets to computer hosts within a network, not between the two or more networks ). A core router is sometimes conflicted with an edge router, which routes packets between a self-contained network and as well as the outside networks along a network backbone.
Wired and Wireless Routers
Networking at home and office level become popular rapidly. The wired and wireless router is used to maintain routing and composition information in their routing table. A wireless router is a device that performs the functions of a router. And also includes the functions of a WAP wireless access point.
It is used to add access to the internet. , r a private computer network(connection of more than one devices or computer). Depending on the Structure and type of model, it can work on in a wired LAN(local area network), in wireless LAN(WLAN), or in both wired and wireless network.
