Let me share with you a comparison between Synecology and Autecology.

Aspect    Synecology     Autecology
Known as Community Ecology Population Ecology
Focus Focuses on the interactions and relationships between different species within a community. Focuses on the study of a single species or population and its interactions with its environment.
Interactions Analyzes interactions such as competition, predation, parasitism and mutualism between different species. Explores interactions like birth, death, reproduction, migration and environmental responses within a population.
Ecological Niche Considers the niche of multiple species within a community and how they partition resources. Examines the ecological niche of a single species, including its habitat, food sources, and environmental preferences.
Biotic and Abiotic Factors Considers both biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors Focuses on abiotic factors like temperature, precipitation and soil quality
Examples Studying the interactions among plants, herbivores and predators in a grassland ecosystem. Studying the growth and reproduction of a bird species in a specific forest habitat.
Approach Takes a more holistic approach by studying multiple species and their collective impact. Tends to use reductionist methods to analyze a single species’ traits and responses in isolation.
