Let me share with you a difference between glottis and epiglottis.

Aspect Glottis Epiglottis
Introduction Part of the larynx (voice box) Part of the larynx, Leaf-shaped cartilage located above the glottis
Function Plays a crucial role in phonation (sound production) by regulating the airflow in and out of the trachea Acts as a lid or cover for the glottis, preventing food and liquids from entering the trachea during swallowing
Role in swallowing Not directly involved in swallowing Directly involved in the process of swallowing, preventing aspiration of food into the airway
Visibility Visible through the laryngoscope during examination Visible during medical imaging or endoscopy procedures focusing on the larynx
Protection of airway Primarily involved in sound production and air passage for breathing Primarily serves as a protective mechanism during swallowing to prevent aspiration into the trachea
Nerve supply Innervated by nerves controlling vocal cord muscles Innervated by nerves controlling the muscles that move the epiglottis
