Question:  During embryonic development which of the following is formed first?

A   Heart

B   Brain

C  Neural tube

D  Skin

Answer:   Neural tube

Embryonic Development Stage         Description
Gastrulation ·        During gastrulation, three germ layers  namely endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm are formed

·        notochord is formed

Neural Plate Formation ·        The notochord, which is mesodermal in origin, causes the overlying ectoderm to roll and form the neural plate.

·        The neural plate is a plate-like structure that develops from the ectoderm and lies above the notochord.

Neural Tube Formation ·        The neural plate then rolls inward, forming a tube-like structure known as the neural tube.

·        The neural tube is the first organ to develop in the embryo and serves as the foundation for the central nervous system.

Development into Brain and Spinal Cord ·        The neural tube further differentiates and gives rise to the brain and spinal cord during subsequent stages of embryonic development.
