Let me share with you a comparison between aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

Aspect Aerobic Bacteria Anaerobic Bacteria
Introduction Bacteria that require oxygen for their growth and metabolism. Bacteria that grows in the absence of oxygen or at oxygen concentrations lower than those in the atmosphere
Metabolism through ·        Aerobic respiration ·        Fermentation

·        Anaerobic respiration

Growth Rate Faster growth rate in the presence of oxygen Slower
Examples ·        Escherichia coli

·        Staphylococcus aureus

·        Clostridium perfringens

·        Prevotella spp

End Products of Metabolism ·        Carbon dioxide

·        water

·        Organic acids

·        Alcohols

·        Gases etc.

Found in ·        Surface of soils and water ·        Deep soils

·        Waterlogged areas

·        Human gut

·        Wounds

Role of nitrogen fixation Some aerobic bacteria are involved in nitrogen fixation, converting atmospheric nitrogen into forms usable by plants Clostridium, are involved in nitrogen fixation in anaerobic environments
Examples of Diseases ·        Pneumonia,

·        Urinary tract infections

·        Skin infections

·        Anaerobic bacteria are often associated with  areas with limited oxygen access, such as abdominal abscesses and periodontal infections
