Summary of The Dying Sun

The dying sun is about the existence of life in the universe. Sir James Jeans, who is the writer of this essay elaborates on the big bang theory which caused the creation of life.

 

He says that some stars in the universe are larger than our earth; even thousands of planets like our earth can fit in each star. Despite this, there would be a spare room. While talking about the number of stars, the writer says that they are large in number. He assumes that they are equal to the grains of sand of all the seashores throughout the world. So, if we look at our earth, it is too small as compared to the whole universe.

 

These stars are moving in their orbit within the universe in groups or individually. It is too rare that one star comes close to another. Here, the writer talks about the big bang theory. He assumes that a star would come close to the sun while wandering into space.  It created tides on the surface of the sun. As the star came nearer, the tides became larger like a mountain. That mountain finally burst and its pieces spread in the universe. These pieces are the planets that move around the sun. Our earth is one of them.

 

Then the writer talks about the survival of life on the stars. He says that the stars are so hot that we cannot imagine the existence of life on them. He says that the pieces of the broken sun became cooler later on and life began on a planet like our earth.

 

The writer says that when we try to explore nature, we are frightened because it is too vast. The stars are also far away from each other. As far as the existence of life is concerned, our earth is the only planet where survival of life is possible. Because other planets don’t have suitable circumstances that are crucial for life.
